Kış Geldi - Avoiding Driving Accidents

Hashtag

Winter is here... well, "almost here" if one wants to be technical about calendar dates. And it might not feel like winter yet, with the warmer temperatures we've had lately. But soon enough, to the dismay of many, snow and ice will be part of driving conditions out there. And that means it could take more work to avoid accidents. No one out there was ever glad to have an accident because it brought them money. Given their choices, everyone would rather not have an accident.

So with winter here, what are the best ways to avoid accidents? A good way is to leave extra time and take things slower than usual. When accident cases go to court, speed is almost always raised as an issue when it comes to pointing fingers about fault. In the winter, even if a vehicle is not speeding, the legal standard for safe speed depends on road conditions. A "safe speed" on a dry road in broad daylight is not a "safe speed" at night when that same road is glazed with a thin layer of ice.

As everyone knows, leaving adequate distance between vehicles is always a good measure. But in the winter, it becomes even more important. There are other driving recommendations that make sense year-round, such as wearing seat belts and avoiding distractions like texting or phone calls. These same things can become extra-important in the winter because conditions are less forgiving. It could also be a good idea to avoid using cruise control and manually driving at the best speeds for given road conditions, visibility, and precipitation. And speaking of visibility, headlights make it easier to be seen by other vehicles.

Hopefully, keeping these things in mind could make your winter drive a safer one. And hopefully, that can make for safer holidays. We wish all of you a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season! May you get to your destinations safely, and may you enjoy the warmth of the season and your time together with friends and family.

Happy Holidays!
