USTA HIRSIZ EV SAHİBİNİ BASTIRIR

"Usta hırsız ev sahibini bastırır." This is a very useful expression for the legal field. It loosely means that the clever thief finds a way to pin blame on the innocent homeowner. Whether the word "usta" or "yavuz" hırsız is used in the proverb, the meaning is understood. The aggressive and "utanmaz" wrongdoer can find a way to argue they are innocent. And we see this a lot in our legal system.

This expression can apply in many situations. In my own work, I see it arise in car accident cases. I could be representing someone who is totally innocent. Yet the other vehicle's driver desperately reaches for things to show that my client had some share of blame. Here's an example from a case I remember from a few years ago.

My client was on a main road minding their own business going about 30 mph. They were within the speed limit. They were not using their cell phone. Suddenly, another car darts out of a driveway in front of them. My client slams on the brakes but is not able to avoid a collision. In most traffic settings, vehicles on the main road have right of way. Vehicles entering from driveways must yield.

It seems like an open-and-shut case. My client is innocent because they were on the main road. The other vehicle is totally to blame. But soon, I see arguments raised by the "usta hırsız" in the other car. They say my client was speeding. They say my client was holding something that looked like a cell phone. They say that since my client struck them like a torpedo instead of them striking my client, that shows my client was wrong.

Lawsuits involve fighting for what is right. And this shows that even in situations where the facts seem clear and obvious, the "usta hırsız" can try to take advantage of the situation.
