There's an old saying about how God makes a poor person happy by having them lose their donkey. The poor person is thrilled when they find their lost donkey! I've heard variations of the storyline, where money or other possessions are used as the things lost, instead of a donkey. But the idea is the same. People are happy to find things they lost. That's the idea behind "unclaimed funds." This is money you might "find" if you once lost it.

How do you find these "unclaimed funds?" They are essentially that proverbial "donkey" that people lose. The difference is that people are often not even aware they lost the funds. This money comes from things such as telephone, electric, or water bills. Or it could be from health insurance companies or former employers. It could be tax refunds. It could be store credits or tuition refunds. You name it, it's likely to wind up in government managed accounts.

Unforunately, this money is not automatically sent to the people who lost it. The reason someone never received the money in the first place was that there was no correct contact information. Or a check went to the wrong person, where it was ultimately lost or thrown out.

To get this money, check with government offices in your region that handle unclaimed funds. These could include comptroller's offices, treasurer's offices, divisions of revenue, or other related agencies. If your name comes up in a search under unclaimed funds, government websites offer instructions on how to file a claim to receive that money.
