The COVID pandemic has introduced many new hardships for people across the world. Everyone's job is impacted in some manner, whether they work in hospitals, restaurants, or delivery companies.
Legally, COVID has presented new legal challenges in terms of worker protection. When people are injured on the job, workers' compensation insurance is supposed to cover them for lost wages and medical bills. But what about injuries due to COVID? This is new ground, and the solutions are not fully clear. At first, some saw the pandemic as not being covered by worker protection laws because it was more flu-like in nature, where it was difficult to prove the source, and whether it was caused by the workplace within the scope of employment. Unfortunately, there is no universal answer across the nation. Some jobs are seen as more vulnerable than others, such as health care workers or first responders. Additionally, workers comp rules can differ by state. For now, lawmakers and elected officials are looking at their state's laws to adapt to the new challenges posed by COVID in the workplace. Hopefully, these laws will evolve with the crisis, and adapt to protect the health and lives of workers everywhere.
