The history of bridges over the Golden Horn is older than the history of Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire, with the first known bridges dating back to around the sixth century. There have been a number of bridges since then, with the modern ones serving as places to congregate, fish, sell merchandise, or simply take in the sea air mixed with the comforting and familiar smells of fish bait and diesel exhaust from the ferries at Yeni Cami.
