Legal Issues with Unpaid Internships

From a legal standpoint, internships can be an interesting area. Ideally, an internship can be a wonderful thing. It can offer valuable experience with a good company. It could be a win-win all around. The company gets a bright young candidate who is eager to learn. And the intern gets meaningful skills and experience that can help toward landing a well-paying job.

But lawmakers also see a problem with some internships. If the arrangement only provides an opportunity to do menial work, where there is nothing meaningful learned, some elected officials see it as free labor. Some say it should be seen as a violation of labor laws. They point to settings where an intern makes copies and scans documents from morning till night.

It could be a tough situation. When new graduates look for work, companies may tell them they need someone with experience. That’s a reasonable expectation. But how do you get experience? Sometimes the internship is the only way, even if it means working for free for a few months.
