Safety Aboard Cruise Ships

Many industries have been adversely impacted by the pandemic. Maybe the most striking examples that are close to home for all of us are restaurants, theaters, offices, and shopping centers. But an industry that we don't hear about as much in terms of impact of the pandemic is the cruise industry. The cruise lines are slowly remobilizing and getting back into cruising operations.

But it didn't happen overnight. There were lots of exchanges for and against resuming cruise operations between the offices of elected officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC recommends that people who are not vaccinated avoid traveling on cruise ships. Additionally, the cruise lines themselves have imposed strict vaccination requirements.

Major cruise lines, including Carnival, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and others have implemented vaccination policies. If you plan to take a cruise, check with your line as to age and timing prior to departure. Although cruise lines have been confronted with situations requiring emergency sanitary measures, such as the outbreak of shipboard gastrointestinal illnesses, COVID presents new and different challenges. These are unchartered waters, but the cruise lines and the Cruise Lines International Association are doing their best to keep passengers safe.

The CDC's latest recommendations include wearing a mask to keep your nose and mouth covered in shared spaces, staying at least 6 feet apart from anyone not traveling with you, washing hands often or using hand sanitizer, avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth, as well as other measures.
