There's an old folk tale where Nasreddin Hoca has a dream about gold coins. He is given nine gold coins in this dream. He looks at the coins in the palm of his hand and wants one more. He demands one more to make an even ten coins. Suddenly... his palm is empty. Now he doesn't even have nine. In his dream, he says, "Okay, nine coins is fine. I don't need ten!" This is sometimes how the art of negotiation works.
Two sides face each other. Each has something that the other wants. But they must negotiate and come to an agreement that is good for both of them. That is a key part of negotiation. It must be good for "both of them." Over the years, I see many people negotiate in court. Some attorneys don't ask for enough. Some ask for too much, and they leave nothing on the table for the other side to walk away with. Here's a short clip about negotiation... Negotiation is a two-sided endeavor. Both sides usually need to be satisfied with the outcome. There's the expression, "You can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink." An attorney could bang her fist on the table and make great demands. But it's important to remember that there are ways to encourage the other side to give you something. You give them something they want. Negotiation is about compromise. It's also about keeping your eye on the prize, as this video of highly intelligent cats shows... "Zekalarıyla Einstein'a Taş Çıkartan 9 Akıllı Kedi" https://youtu.be/vcRRaN8G-OE
Compromise is often key. In a divorce, it could be about setting visitation days to see children. In a gas station sale, it could be about finding a solution to leaking underground gasoline tanks. In a sales contract involving textiles, it could be about compromising on a slightly different color with a reduction in price.
When people are too stubborn in negotiation and give the other side nothing to work with, they can find themselves in the position of Nasreddin Hoca with an empty palm. That's when those nine coins instead of ten look very good. Here's another favorite story from Nasreddin Hoca...
