"An idiot threw a stone into a well... and forty wise people couldn't get it out." This popular proverb sometimes applies to legal problems. A recent case I know involved an overdue credit card bill. The credit card company called this person to alert them. Instead of listening, he lost his temper. He flew into a rage and cursed at the credit card representative. After yelling, he slammed the phone down, thinking he took control of the matter.

Time went by after that call. This person didn't follow up on the card balance. He ignored further calls. He ignored letters. What happened next is a classic example of "kuyudan tas çıkarmak," like the atasöz. The account became past due. Late fees piled up. The credit card company turned the account over to collections. Collections turned it over to a law firm.

The law firm sued. In the end, the person's bank account was frozen. His paycheck was garnished. His salary was partially deducted to pay the balance. His credit score was trashed. If this person had gotten good advice, he could have prevented the whole mess. He could have entered a debt counseling program. He could have looked into settlement. He could have looked into bankruptcy. Unfortunately, it became more expensive to clean the mess up in the end.
