Nasreddin Hocanın Eşeği

Everyone knows the story about Nasreddin Hoca riding his donkey to the market. People along the road mutter, "Look at that man making his son walk as he rides in comfort." He switches places with his son. People then ask why a foolish old man walks while his young son rides. They decide to BOTH ride the donkey. Now everyone criticizes them for being cruel to a poor animal. The moral of the story - it can be difficult to make everyone happy.

This can be true in legal matters. The law is not always about reading textbooks. Sometimes it is about finding practical solutions. In a divorce, one spouse wants the children for a long summer vacation and all major winter holidays. The other spouse wanted to go overseas with the kids for the summer. They both need quality time with the kids... something has to give. A compromise is needed. And finding a compromise is less expensive than fighting in court. Both of them may want certain things, but a more practical solution could be somewhere in between.

The law is about lawsuits and arguing in court. Yes, that is true. But the law is also about finding practical solutions to problems. Maybe like the story about Nasreddin Hoca and the donkey, you can't please everyone 100% of the time. But if people compromise and look at things from the other side's point of view, a more economical solution can sometimes be reached. And that can be less expensive than a long, bitter court battle.
