When we hear the term copyright law, we often think of written works such as books or movie screenplays. However, there have been many high-profile lawsuits between music artists. One accuses the other of "stealing" their song. This is considered "infringement." The original artist says, "Your new hit single sounds a lot like my song." Some artists say they weren't aware of the original song. Or they may say they were "inspired" by the original song.

When do things cross the line? When can the original artist legally claim, "You ripped off my song?" It's a complicated business. As John Lennon said, "There are only a few notes. Just variations on a theme." And if you look back in time, many pop songs are based on pieces composed by Bach and other classical composers. Those composers are long gone for many, many years. Their works are in the public domain. That means others can use them without paying royalties - money an artist earns when selling a record or when a radio station plays their song.

How many notes can one "borrow" before the original artist cries, "Music thief!" And when you stop and think about it, just who is the original artist? Maybe the original song is similar to another song. This is a very specialized area of law. Lawyers call in music experts with strong knowledge in music theory and the songwriting industry. Experts analyze the two songs. They look for patterns, or repetition of notes. They look for backing chords and bass lines. They look at the drum track. If there are too many "similarities" to be mere coincidence, the matter can make its way to court.
