When we look at problems, we often look for solutions that are in plain sight. But we should sometimes look for answers we don't readily see. Many years ago, a Boeing 777 airliner crash-landed after losing power when trying to land. Fortunately, everyone survived. The cause of the accident was a great mystery. Investigators worked very hard to find out why the engines lost power. Ultimately, the cause turned out to be something invisible. It was ice in the fuel system.
With many investigations, you often see the thing you're looking for... something sucked into the jet intake, a leaking fuel tank, or a bad tire in the landing gear. But here, the ice was nowhere to be seen. It did its damage at 30,000 feet. But down on the ground, there wasn't a trace of ice left. Injury cases can sometimes be like this. I had a case where a client had a bad accident on a local road. They were in severe pain. They knew they were injured. But the insurance company said there's no broken bones. There's no bruises. It wasn't a high-speed crash. They said, "You have no case." Like that elusive ice, it wasn't easy to prove this case. For me, the injuries in this case were like that ice in the fuel system. You knew something was there. But how do you prove something you can't easily see? In a setting like this, you use all the available information you have. You check with the treating doctors. You check with the neurologists who performed diagnostic nerve testing. Yes, there were no broken bones in the accident case. The x-rays showed that. But there were small herniations. This was a squeezing of the soft tissue between the bones of the spine. The MRI of the cervical spine proved this. There was numbness in the victim's arms. How do you prove something you can't easily see? Electrodiagnostic tests proved the existence of nerve damage. In the end, we won the case. But it shows that you often have to look closely at everything to prove something important, whether it's a medical injury or an engineering failure. And sometimes you need to look where there isn't anything obvious in plain sight - like that ice in the Boeing 777 fuel system.
